Marshmallow Farming in Kashmir: How to Grow Althaea officinalis for Profit

Marshmallow Kashmir
Althaea officinalis could fit well into Kashmir's emerging high-value medicinal and aromatic plant sector, especially as farmers look beyond conventional horticultural crops. JKMPIC has a long record of promoting medicinal-plant cultivation in the region and has specifically documented A. officinalis in its planting-material programme.

Althaea officinalis L., commonly known as Marshmallow and Khatmi, is a medicinal plant of the Malvaceae family. Both root and seed are recognized as medicinal plant materials in Indian Ayurvedic and Unani references.

Althaea officinalis Root
The root (Baikh Khatmi) is the principal commercial medicinal part. It is typically harvested, cleaned, sliced when necessary and dried for storage and further processing. The root is valued particularly for its mucilage content.

Commercial forms:
  • Dried whole root
  • Cut root
  • Dried root pieces
  • Root powder
  • Herbal raw material
Althaea officinalis Seeds
The seeds are known in Unani terminology as Tukhm-e-Khatmi. They are small, dark brown to blackish and somewhat kidney-shaped. Published Indian medicinal-plant literature identifies dried seed as an official medicinal material.

Seeds can be used for propagation, making quality seed important for farmers establishing commercial plantations.
