Wild fruit plants of Kashmir,Utrakhand & Himachal pardesh

Himalayan wild fruit plants

The  Jammu and Kashmir Medicinal Plants Introduction Centre-JKMPIC, is a pioneer institution in pvt. sector to start cultivation of important indigenous medicinal plants and introduce many from other parts of the world. A preliminary study on cultivation of medicinal plants in Jammu and Kashmir was from this institution.

The medicinal plant garden created, grown and nurtured by JKMPIC around its unit complex contains Kashmir’s largest privately owned collection of medicinal plants, spanning over 200 varieties, including rare and endemic medicinal plants suitable for Himachal pradesh , Kashmir, Utrakhand and cool areas of India.

The garden is a treasure of herbal remedies that have been used for thousands of years by our ancestors for healing, health and beauty.

All plants in the garden are carefully conserved for future generations further, a tissue culture lab. Established within the medicinal plant garden propagates and distributes rare medicinal plants as a further conservation effort. The plant introduction centre also nestled within the garden carries out advanced plant study  into the medicinal plants in the garden, researching and validating their traditional uses.

Pyrethrum flowers for sale in Kashmir

Where does pyrethrum grow?

Pyrethrum was introduced in Kashmir  from Europe in the late 1837s. It started as a large-scale crop, but today it is widely cultivated in the South Kashmir  by small-scale farmers. Kashmir  produces about 36% of the world supply. The success of pyrethrum cultivation is attributed to good weather conditions.

Himalayan Indigo tree

Indigo tree

Plants have an extensive root system and are also fairly wind tolerant, they can be planted as a windbreak and also to prevent soil erosion. Resinous pustules on the plant contain "amorpha", a contact and stomachic insecticide that also acts as an insect repellent. The stems are used as bedding. The plant contains some indigo pigment and can be used to make a blue dye. Unfortunately, the pigment is only present in very small quantities, there is not enough to harvest commercially.

Medicinal plants of Kashmir

Gojiberries Kashmir

Goji berries are very popular at the moment because they’re classified as a “superfood.” With plenty of antioxidants and vitamins, they’re popular in organic juices, smoothies, and bowls. They’re also fairly hardy and able to thrive in dry environments.
