| Ginkgo trees in Kashmir |
The proposed Ginkgo Plant Propagation Centre in Kashmir can become a specialized nursery, research, training and commercial planting-material centre dedicated to Ginkgo biloba. The project would combine Ginkgo conservation with modern nursery production, landscaping, medicinal-plant education and long-term commercial opportunities for farmers, institutions and private growers.
Ginkgo biloba is one of the world's most distinctive living tree species, valued for its attractive fan-shaped leaves, brilliant yellow autumn colour and long lifespan. Kashmir's temperate environment offers an interesting opportunity for its cultivation and propagation. Research conducted under Kashmir conditions has demonstrated successful Ginkgo seed germination following cold stratification, providing a useful scientific foundation for developing local propagation protocols.
The centre could be established initially on one acre of land and divided into several specialized sections: a Ginkgo mother-plant block, seedling nursery, shade-net house, polyhouse, hardening area, potting section, research unit and training facility. A carefully documented collection of selected Ginkgo trees would form the foundation of the programme. Each mother plant could be given an accession number, with records maintained for its source, cultivar, sex, growth, health and propagation performance.
Commercial Nursery Production
The principal business opportunity would be the production and sale of Ginkgo seeds, seedlings, saplings and larger landscape trees. Production could begin with 5,000 plants annually and gradually expand to 10,000 or even 25,000 plants as market demand develops.
Potential customers include hotels, resorts, parks, universities, hospitals, government institutions, landscaping companies, private gardens and farmers interested in establishing Ginkgo plantations.
The plant nursery could offer different grades of planting material, ranging from young seedlings to two- or three-year-old container-grown saplings and premium specimen trees. Selected cultivars could command higher prices where reliable propagation material and genuine cultivar identity are available.
Research and Training
The centre could also become a Ginkgo research and training facility for Kashmir. Demonstration programmes could cover seed collection, seed storage, cold stratification, seedling production, cutting propagation, grafting, transplanting, irrigation, nutrition and plantation management.
Farmers and nursery entrepreneurs could be trained through short courses such as “Ginkgo Cultivation and Nursery Management in Kashmir.”
A dedicated seed bank could preserve high-quality Ginkgo seed, while the mother-plant collection could provide material for future propagation programmes.
Ginkgo Garden and Demonstration Area
A portion of the property could be developed as a public Ginkgo Garden, combining Ginkgo trees with Kashmir's medicinal and aromatic plants. Walking paths, botanical labels and educational displays could explain Ginkgo's biology, history, cultivation and potential uses.
The long-term vision is to establish “Ginkgo Kashmir” as a recognized source of quality Ginkgo planting material, serving Kashmir and potentially other suitable regions of India.
Rather than depending solely on future leaf or timber income, the project would generate earlier cash flow through nursery sales while building a valuable long-term collection of mature Ginkgo trees.
