The Jammu and
Kashmir Medicinal Plants Introduction Centre-JKMPIC,
is a pioneer institution to start cultivation of important indigenous medicinal
plants and introduce many from other parts of the world. A preliminary study on
cultivation of medicinal plants in Jammu and Kashmir was from this institution.
The medicinal plant garden created, grown and nurtured by JKMPIC around
its unit complex contains Kashmir’s largest privately owned collection of
medicinal plants, spanning over 200 varieties, including rare and endemic
medicinal plants.
The
garden is a treasure of herbal remedies that have been used for thousands of
years by our ancestors for healing, health and beauty. All plants in the garden
are carefully conserved for future generations further, a tissue culture lab.
Established within the medicinal plant garden propagates and distributes rare
medicinal plants as a further conservation effort. The plant introduction
centre also nestled within the garden carries out advanced plant study into the medicinal plants in the garden,
researching and validating their traditional uses.

Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus), also known as sunchoke, is a hardy perennial plant belonging to the sunflower family. Native to North America, it is cultivated worldwide for its edible underground tubers, which are rich in nutrients and valued for both human consumption and animal feed. Despite its name, Jerusalem artichoke is neither from Jerusalem nor related to the common artichoke.
The tubers have a crisp texture and a mildly sweet, nutty flavor. They are an excellent source of dietary fiber, especially inulin, a natural prebiotic that supports gut health and helps regulate blood sugar levels. Jerusalem artichokes are also rich in potassium, iron, phosphorus, vitamin C, and several B vitamins, making them a healthy addition to a balanced diet.
This crop is easy to grow and adapts well to a wide range of climates, including the temperate regions of Kashmir. It thrives in well-drained, fertile soils with moderate irrigation and full sunlight. Once established, the plants are highly productive and can produce impressive yields of tubers with relatively low input costs. Their tall stems and bright yellow flowers also make them attractive in home gardens and agroforestry systems.
Jerusalem artichokes are versatile in the kitchen. The tubers can be eaten raw in salads, roasted, steamed, mashed, or added to soups and stir-fries. They are increasingly used in the production of health foods, prebiotic powders, and natural sweeteners due to their high inulin content.
Commercial cultivation offers promising opportunities for farmers, as demand for functional foods and diabetic-friendly products continues to grow. The crop also has potential for processing into flour, chips, pickles, and bioethanol. With its excellent nutritional profile, resilience, and market value, Jerusalem artichoke is emerging as a profitable alternative crop for sustainable agriculture and diversified farming systems.

The leaves and seeds can also be used. The leaves are harvested and dried
in late spring before the plant comes into flower. The plant is antispasmodic,
carminative, diaphoretic, diuretic, expectorant, stimulant, stomachic, tonic.
An infusion is used to ease flatulence, indigestion, chronic bronchitis and
typhus. It stimulates blood flow to the peripheral parts of the body and so is of
value in treating poor circulation - it is considered a specific treatment for
Buerger's disease, a condition that narrows the arteries of the hands and feet.
Angelica is contra-indicated for people with a tendency towards diabetes
since its use can increase sugar levels in the urine. This plant should not be
prescribed for pregnant women, nor should the juice be allowed to come into
contact with the eyes. An essential oil from the seeds is sometimes used as a
rub to relieve rheumatic conditions.
