Kiwi seeds (Actinidia spp.) are suitable for growers interested in propagating kiwi plants from seed. Seed-grown kiwi can be used for home gardens, nurseries, educational projects, and experimental cultivation.

For commercial fruit production, it is important to note that seed-grown kiwi plants are genetically variable and may differ in fruit quality, yield, and growth habit. Kiwi plants are also commonly dioecious, meaning male and female flowers are usually produced on separate plants. Therefore, growers wanting reliable commercial fruit production generally prefer selected male and female cultivars propagated by cuttings or grafting.

For nursery production, kiwi seeds should be cleaned from ripe fruit and sown in a well-drained, moisture-retentive growing medium. Germination can be improved through a period of cold-moist stratification, followed by sowing under suitable temperatures and good light. Young seedlings should be protected from extreme cold, drought and excessive waterlogging.

For Kashmir cultivation, kiwi can be an interesting fruit crop where the site has suitable winter chilling, adequate summer warmth, irrigation and protection from severe frost. A trellis or other strong support system is required because kiwi is a vigorous climbing vine.
Important: Seedlings should be treated as propagation material, not as guaranteed true-to-type plants. If the objective is commercial production of a known variety such as Hayward, named nursery plants or grafted/budded material are generally preferable to seeds.
