The temperate climate of Kashmir offers excellent conditions for cultivating rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus), one of the world's most valuable aromatic and medicinal herbs. With cool winters, mild summers, abundant sunshine, and fertile soils, many parts of the Kashmir Valley provide an ideal environment for commercial rosemary farming. As global demand for natural herbs, essential oils, herbal teas, and botanical extracts continues to rise, rosemary is emerging as a promising crop for farmers seeking to diversify their income.
Rosemary is a hardy, evergreen perennial shrub that can remain productive for 8–15 years when grown under proper management. Once established, the crop requires relatively low maintenance and tolerates short periods of drought. It thrives in well-drained sandy loam or loamy soils with a pH of 6.0–7.5 and performs best in full sunlight. Although rosemary is drought-tolerant, supplemental irrigation during dry periods helps maintain vigorous growth and higher yields.
Commercial plantations are generally established using rooted stem cuttings rather than seeds, ensuring uniform growth and better survival. In Kashmir, spring is considered the best planting season, allowing young plants to establish before winter. Regular pruning encourages branching, increases leaf production, and improves the overall quality of the harvested material.
The harvested leaves have a wide range of commercial applications. Rosemary is widely used as a culinary herb in restaurants and food processing industries. It is also an important raw material for herbal teas, spice blends, cosmetics, soaps, perfumes, aromatherapy products, and pharmaceutical preparations. Steam-distilled rosemary essential oil is particularly valued for its refreshing aroma and is used extensively in personal care products and wellness formulations.
The growing international preference for natural and plant-based ingredients has expanded the market for rosemary products. Farmers can increase profitability by producing dried rosemary leaves, value-added herbal products, or essential oil instead of selling fresh foliage alone. Organic cultivation and proper post-harvest handling can further enhance market value, especially for premium domestic and export markets.

Based on production estimates under standard management practices, commercial rosemary farming has the potential to generate attractive annual returns, particularly when growers adopt scientific cultivation techniques, maintain product quality, and establish reliable marketing channels.
For successful cultivation, growers should ensure proper drainage, avoid waterlogging, maintain weed-free fields, and harvest the crop at the appropriate growth stage to maximize leaf quality and essential oil content. Since rosemary is a perennial crop, a single plantation can provide repeated harvests over many years, reducing annual establishment costs and improving long-term profitability.
With increasing demand from the food, herbal, cosmetic, and wellness industries, rosemary represents an excellent opportunity for progressive farmers in Kashmir. By combining modern cultivation practices with value addition and effective marketing, rosemary plantations can contribute to higher farm incomes while supporting sustainable agriculture and the region's growing medicinal and aromatic plant sector.
