Himalayan Goji Berry Trees | Kashmir Grown Plants

Goji berry (also called wolfberry) is being introduced and cultivated in Kashmir, and there has been growing interest in plantation and farming of this high-value fruit in the region.

1. Introduction & Research Initiatives

The Jammu & Kashmir Medicinal Plants Introduction Centre (JKMPIC) has been a key organization promoting the cultivation of medicinal and fruit plants in the region, including goji berries (Lycium barbarum). They have experimented with propagation and offered seeds/planting material locally for growers and researchers.

2. Climate & Growing Conditions
Goji berries thrive in temperate climates with good sun exposure and well-drained soils.
Kashmir’s cool climate and fertile valley soils can be suitable for cultivation, but frost protection and site selection are important for good yields.

3. Propagation & Plantation
Goji plants can be grown from seeds, seedlings, or cuttings.
It’s generally recommended to start plants in a nursery and transplant them in spring when the risk of frost is lower.

Proper spacing (e.g., about 1.6 m between plants) and soil preparation improves growth and yield.

4. Yield Potential
Under good conditions, commercial yields in similar climates can be roughly 2200-4500 kg/ha (dry fruit) by the third to fifth year of planting. Medicinal Plants in India

📌 Practical Considerations for Kashmir Farmers

Suitable Locations
Valleys with moderate winters and protection from extreme frost.
Well-drained terraces and raised beds to avoid waterlogging.

Water & Soil
Requires regular watering during the growth season but cannot tolerate soggy soils.
Soil pH ideally around 6.8–8.1 with good organic matter.

Market Potential
Goji is considered a superfood with growing demand in health and nutraceutical markets; dried goji berries from Himalayan regions (including Kashmir) are sold locally and online.
