Nepeta Cataria: The Aromatic Herb Loved by Cats and Pollinators

Nepeta cataria, commonly known as catnip or catmint, is a perennial herb belonging to the mint family, Lamiaceae. Native to parts of Europe, Asia and the Middle East, the plant has become widely naturalized in many parts of the world. It is best known for its distinctive effect on cats, but Nepeta cataria is also valued as an attractive garden plant, a source of nectar for pollinators and a  herbal plant.

Nepeta cataria is an aromatic, branching perennial that can typically grow around 50–100 cm tall, depending on climate, soil and growing conditions. Its stems are square, reflecting its membership in the mint family. The leaves are greyish-green, heart-shaped to triangular and covered with fine hairs. When crushed, they release a characteristic minty aroma.

The plant produces small white to pale pink or lavender flowers, often marked with purple spots. Flowering generally occurs during the warmer months. Its attractive flowers can bring bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects into gardens.

Catnip is particularly famous because of its effect on many domestic cats. The plant contains an aromatic compound called nepetalactone, which can trigger a strong behavioral response in susceptible cats. Cats may rub against the plant, roll on the ground, sniff it, lick it or become temporarily playful and excited.
