Crocus sativus Saffron Corms: Genotype, Calibre, Grading and Commercial Planting Material in Kashmir

Crocus sativus L., commonly known as saffron or Kesar, is one of the world's most valuable spice crops. In Kashmir, saffron cultivation has a long agricultural tradition, particularly in the Pampore saffron belt. Unlike many crops, saffron is propagated commercially through corms rather than viable seeds. Therefore, the quality, size, health and genetic uniformity of planting corms are critical factors determining crop establishment, flowering, saffron yield and multiplication.

Saffron genotype and planting material

Crocus sativus is a sterile triploid plant and does not normally produce viable seeds for conventional commercial propagation. New plants are therefore produced vegetatively from corms. This means that selecting true-to-type and locally adapted planting material is especially important for maintaining uniformity in a saffron plantation.

Kashmiri saffron planting material should ideally be healthy, mature, firm and free from visible fungal infection, mechanical damage and rotting. Farmers should also maintain the identity and traceability of their planting stock so that desirable characteristics can be preserved from one generation to the next.

Mother corm and daughter corm

The mother corm is the mature saffron corm used for planting. It contains stored carbohydrates and nutrients that support early plant growth and flowering. During the growing season, the plant produces new daughter corms around or above the original corm.

Daughter corms are the vegetatively produced next-generation corms. Their size varies considerably. Small daughter corms may require additional growing seasons before reaching sufficient size for reliable flowering, while larger daughter corms can become productive planting material sooner.

Consequently, saffron growers should distinguish between flowering-size corms and small cormlets intended primarily for multiplication.

Why corm calibre matters

Corm calibre refers to the size or weight of a saffron corm. It is one of the most important indicators of potential flowering performance.

Large corms contain greater stored reserves and generally have greater flowering potential than small corms. Research conducted under Kashmir conditions has demonstrated a relationship between increasing corm weight and flowering performance.

A practical grading system for commercial planting can therefore be developed according to corm weight:

This should be considered a practical commercial grading system, rather than a universally recognized statutory grading standard. Actual grading specifications may vary according to the nursery, research institution or buyer.

Expected flowers per corm

Flower production depends on several factors, including corm weight, planting date, soil conditions, temperature, moisture, nutrition, disease pressure and the physiological condition of the corm.

As a general planning guide, very small corms below 5–8 grams may produce little or no flowering during the first season. Corms in the 10–15 gram range have better potential, while corms above 15 grams are generally preferred for commercial production.

Under favourable conditions, large corms can produce multiple flowers. However, flower number should always be treated as an expected range rather than a guaranteed figure.

For commercial planning, growers may use the following approximate expectations:

  • <8 g: 0–1 flower/corm
  • 8–10 g: around 0–1 flower/corm
  • 10–15 g: approximately 1–2 flowers/corm
  • 15–20 g: approximately 1–2 or more flowers/corm
  • 20–30 g: approximately 2–3 flowers/corm
  • >30 g: potentially 3–4 flowers/corm under favourable conditions

The actual result can differ substantially from field to field.

Saffron yield per hectare

Saffron yield is influenced by planting density, corm size, soil fertility, irrigation, drainage, weather and crop management. Therefore, a single yield figure should not be used for every farm.

For commercial planning in Kashmir, approximate dried saffron yields may be considered as follows:

Traditional or low-input cultivation: around 1–2.5 kg/ha
Good commercial management: around 3–5 kg/ha
Improved intensive management: around 5–8 kg/ha
Exceptional conditions: potentially above 8 kg/ha

These are planning ranges, not guaranteed production figures.

An important consideration is that saffron production can change considerably with crop age. First-year production may be lower because the field is establishing, while larger corms and improved daughter-corm development can contribute to better production in subsequent seasons.

Selecting quality corms

Farmers purchasing saffron corms should examine more than just size. High-quality planting material should be:

  • True-to-type Crocus sativus
  • Mature and firm
  • Healthy and free from rot
  • Free from obvious fungal infection
  • Free from serious mechanical injury
  • Properly cured and stored
  • Appropriately sized for the intended production system
  • Obtained from a reliable and traceable source

Large corms are valuable, but large size alone does not guarantee high yield. A large diseased corm may be inferior to a slightly smaller healthy corm.

Recommended planting material for commercial cultivation

For commercial saffron production in Kashmir, corms of 10 grams or more can be considered useful planting material, with 15 grams or above particularly attractive where the objective is strong first-year flowering.

Corms below 5 grams are better treated as multiplication material rather than premium flowering stock. Farmers can plant smaller daughter corms in nursery or multiplication plots, allowing them to develop over time before transferring them into a commercial flowering field.

This approach can reduce the cost of establishing future planting material while maintaining a continuous supply of daughter corms.
