Cordyceps sinensis in Kashmir: The Himalayan Keeda Jadi Worth ₹1,000–2,000 Per Gram

Cordyceps sinensis in Kashmir

In Kashmir, Cordyceps sinensis (commonly known as Keeda Jadi or Yarsagumba) is a highly prized medicinal fungus collected from high-altitude Himalayan meadows. Depending on its size, quality, and market demand, the retail price generally ranges between ₹1,000 and ₹2,000 per gram. Premium specimens with larger caterpillar bodies and intact fruiting structures command higher prices, while smaller grades are comparatively less expensive.

Because a single dry specimen typically weighs 0.3–0.5 grams, approximately 2–3 whole pieces make up one gram. The fungus is valued in traditional medicine for its reputed health benefits and is traded both domestically and internationally. Seasonal collection of Keeda Jadi also provides an important source of income for communities living in the mountainous regions of Kashmir.

However, sustainable harvesting and conservation measures are essential to protect this rare Himalayan resource from overexploitation and habitat degradation.
