73 Years Later, the "A-Bomb" Ginkgo Trees Still Grow in Hiroshima

Ginkgo trees in Kashmir

On August 6, 1945, an Allied plane dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, creating a fireball 1,200 feet in diameter.

Disaster rained down upon the city, killing an estimated 150,000 people and leveling both the biological and man-made landscape. Little was left standing, but somehow the ginkgo trees were able to weather one of the most destructive moments in human history.

Ginkgo biloba has been proven to improve short-term memory, alleviate allergies, relieve  depression, alertness and boost circulation.  Ginkgo, which dates back 270 million years, has long been grown for its leaf, which is dried and processed into powders, pills and teas.

Ginkgo trees (Ginkgo biloba) are not native to India or Kashmir. They are native to China and are commonly cultivated in various parts of the world, including temperate regions of North America, Europe, and Asia. In India, ginkgo trees are sometimes grown as ornamental trees in gardens or parks due to their unique fan-shaped leaves and their resilience in urban environments.

Ginkgo thrives under diverse climatic conditions from temperate to tropical.

Organic Comfrey fertilizer from Kashmir

Comfrey liquid manure is prepared in the same way as nettle liquid manure. Place the leaves and stems in a large bucket, fill with rainwater and cover with a cloth or lid. The stems and leaves of comfrey contain the most nutrients, which is why they are best suited for making slurry.
Organic comfrey fertilizer

Soil fertility is key in any sustainable food growing operation. Without proper management, plants will drain the soil of its fertility, leading to reduced productivity and plant health. Most synthetic fertilizers are very harmful for the environment.

This plant Is one of the most common dynamic accumulators used in permaculture due to its high nutrient value and prolific growth. Symphytum officinale-Comfrey is a perennial that can thrive year after year in a bed of its own.

With roots that can reach up to ten feet beneath the surface of the soil, comfrey is believed to be excellent at bringing hard-to-reach nutrients closer to the soil. As it decomposes, these nutrients can then be used by other plants.

Comfrey grows quickly and its leaves can often be harvested multiple times in a single season. The leaves can be worked into the soil as green manure or composted in compost piles. Interestingly, comfrey leaves can also be steeped in water to create a “compost tea.” This tea can then be used to water plants, giving them a nutrient boost.

Comfrey leaves also work as wonderful mulch. They are placed on the ground near other plants, where they help with water retention and keeping the soil cool. Of course, as the leaves break down, they also make nutrients available to the growing plants.

Marshmallow leaf tea benefits

marshmallow plant

The marshmallow plant (Althaea officinalis) has been traditionally valued for its medicinal properties, particularly in herbal medicine

Here are some of its potential benefits:
Soothing properties: Marshmallow root and leaves contain mucilage, a gel-like substance that coats and soothes mucous membranes. This makes it beneficial for soothing sore throats, coughs, and digestive issues like gastritis and acid reflux.

Anti-inflammatory effects: The mucilage in marshmallow can help reduce inflammation, making it useful for conditions such as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and skin irritations.

Respiratory health: Marshmallow has been used to relieve respiratory issues such as coughs and bronchitis by soothing irritated mucous membranes in the respiratory tract.

Skin benefits: Marshmallow extract is sometimes used in skincare products due to its hydrating and soothing properties. It may help calm skin irritations and reduce redness.

Digestive support: Marshmallow root is believed to have mild laxative properties and can help with digestive discomfort and constipation.

Urinary tract health: Marshmallow has been traditionally used to support urinary tract health and alleviate symptoms of urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Wound healing: The soothing and anti-inflammatory properties of marshmallow may aid in wound healing when applied topically.

"Exploring Elderberry Cultivation Potential in Kashmir: Climate, Cultivation Practices, and Market Opportunities"

Elderberry plantation in Kashmir

Elderberry cultivation in Kashmir, while somewhat uncommon, is feasible under the right conditions. Here are some key points regarding elderberry cultivation in the high altitude Kashmir  region:

Climate and Soil Requirements: Elderberries generally prefer temperate climates. Kashmir's climate, with its cool summers and cold winters, can be suitable for elderberries, especially in the higher altitude regions where temperatures are cooler. Well-drained, fertile soil is ideal, although elderberries can tolerate a range of soil types.

Varieties: Choosing the right variety is crucial. Some elderberry varieties are more suited to colder climates and shorter growing seasons, which would be beneficial in Kashmir. Varieties like 'Adams', 'York',  'Nova' and 'Alfatha' are known to perform well in colder regions.

Planting and Care: Planting: Elderberries are usually propagated from hardwood cuttings. Planting in early spring or fall is recommended.

Spacing : They should be spaced about 6 to 10 feet apart, depending on the variety and expected growth.

Watering : Elderberries require regular watering, especially during dry spells, to establish themselves.
Pruning : Pruning is essential to encourage productivity and maintain plant health.
Harvesting : Elderberries typically produce fruit in late summer to early fall. The clusters of small, dark berries should be harvested when fully ripe. They can be used fresh or processed into jams, juices, or medicinal extracts.

Challenges : In Kashmir, potential challenges could include pests, diseases, and ensuring adequate winter protection for the plants. Elderberries are relatively hardy but may require some winter protection, especially in colder microclimates.

Market Potential: Elderberries have gained popularity due to their nutritional benefits and use in various products like syrups, teas, and supplements. Local markets and potentially export markets could be explored, given the unique climate and potential for organic fruit production in Kashmir.

Local Knowledge and Adaptation : Consulting with local agricultural experts or experienced growers in the region can provide valuable insights into adapting elderberry cultivation to Kashmiri conditions.
Overall, while elderberry cultivation in Kashmir may present some challenges, with proper planning, variety selection, and care, it can be a rewarding venture, both economically and agriculturally.
