Willows, also called sallows and osiers, from the genus Salix, are around 400 species of deciduous trees and shrubs, found primarily on moist soils in cold desert and temperate Kashmir region.

Willow bark acts a lot like aspirin, so it is used for pain, including headache, muscle or joint pain, menstrual cramps, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), osteoarthritis, gout, and a disease of the spine called ankylosing spondylitis. Willow bark's pain relieving potential has been recognized throughout history.

“Herbal Garden” of  “Herbal Garden” of  Jammu, Kashmir & Ladakh Medicinal Plants Introduction Centre is situated at the centre of the institute. Area of Herbal garden is 3 Kanals in two areas  with landscaped area comprising of more than 193 species and more than 2500 plants in number containing medicinal herbs, shrubs, trees, fruit plants, berries and climbers. 

Garden simulates terrace farming patterns as it has hilly terrain. The left side of the garden comprises of medicinal herbs, shrubs and climbers and medicinal trees have been grown on right side, both the sides are divided by steps. Herbal garden is equipped with appropriate water source, tools and other materials. It has facility of green house and a poly-house for better propagation and preservation of medicinal plants/herbs, it is maintain by the skilled garden workers. Herbal Garden facilitates the academic and research need of the institute. The main objective is to facilitate the training and teaching of medicinal plants by way of identification and demonstration of the medicinal plants.

Bittersweet is a poisonous plant that has a long history of use in the treatment of skin diseases, warts, tumours, felons etc. It should be used with caution and only under the supervision of a qualified practitioner, this is a poisonous plant that, in excess, paralyzes the central nervous system, slows the heart and respiration, and lowers temperature, causing vertigo, delirium, convulsions and death. All parts of the plant are alterative, anodyne, depurative, mildly diuretic, emetic, expectorant, hepatic, mildly narcotic and purgative. The dried stem, usually collected in the autumn and preferably from the ends of branches 2 - 3 years old, is the part that is most valued medicinally, though the leaves are also used. The plant is chiefly used as an alterative when taken internally in the treatment of a range of skin diseases, it is also used in the treatment of arthritis, rheumatism, bronchial congestion, heart ailments, ulcerative colitis and jaundice.  Externally, the plant is used to treat skin eruptions, ulcers, rheumatism and cellulite. 

Two to three year old stems are harvested in the spring, or after the leaves have fallen in the autumn, and dried for later use.The fruits are marinated in vinegar and applied to cancerous sores and other swellings. A decoction of the root is used in the treatment of cancer and swellings. The root is harvested in the autumn and dried for later use.  

A homeopathic remedy is made from the fresh, green, still pliant stems and leaves, harvested as the plant begins to flower. This is used in treating a variety of complaints including backaches, cough, diarrhoea, eye inflammations and joint pains.
