Walnut is the most important fruit of Kashmir. It is grown in Jammu and Kashmir. It also grown in Ramban, Kishtwar (JK), Himachal pardesh and Uttarakhand. Jammu and Kashmir is the main Walnut producing Himalayan tiny country contributing more than 88.4% of the total production. Walnut is exported to more than 49 countries with the annual earning of more than 893 crores INR as foreign exchange as on date.

Medicinal use of Walnut : The walnut tree has a long history of medicinal use, being used in folk medicine to treat a wide range of complaints. The leaves are alterative, anthelmintic, anti-inflammatory, astringent and depurative. They are used internally the treatment of constipation, chronic coughs, asthma, diarrhoea, dyspepsia etc. The leaves are also used to treat skin ailments and purify the blood. They are considered to be specific in the treatment of strumous sores. Male inflorescences are made into a broth and used in the treatment of coughs and vertigo. The rind is anodyne and astringent. It is used in the treatment of diarrhoea and anaemia. The seeds are antilithic, diuretic and stimulant. They are used internally in the treatment of low back pain, frequent urination, weakness of both legs, chronic cough, asthma, constipation due to dryness or anaemia and stones in the urinary tract. Externally, they are made into a paste and applied as a poultice to areas of dermatitis and eczema. The oil from the seed is anthelmintic. It is also used in the treatment of menstrual problems and dry skin conditions. The cotyledons are used in the treatment of cancer. Walnut has a long history of folk use in the treatment of cancer, some extracts from the plant have shown anticancer activity. The bark and root bark are anthelmintic, astringent and detergent. The plant is used in Bach flower remedies - the keywords for prescribing it are "Oversensitive to ideas and influences" and "The link-breaker".

The Jammu and Kashmir Medicinal Plants Introduction Centre, Pampore-Pulwama was established under the Fruit & Medicinal plants Development Project during the year 1991.  The infrastructure, existing as on date, was created over a period of 5-10 years.  The Olive plantation was started during the year 2001-2004.  The main thrust of the programme was to develop Olive plantation of exotic/ improved cultivars.  Propagation of Pear, Plum, Peach, Apricot, Hazelnut,  Strawberry, Goji berry, Ginkgo biloba and Walnut were also included in the developmental plan of the Unit.  Under the Fruit & Medicinal plants Development , 3 cultivars of  Olive, 3 cultivars of Peach, 2 cultivars of Apricot, 3 cultivars of Plum, 3 cultivars of Almond, 2 1 cultivar of Saffron-Crocus, 4 cultivars of Pear, 3 cultivars of Hazelnut, 3 cultivars of Kiwi,4 cultivars of Strawberry and one cultivar of Persimmon were imported from Italy & China.

One olive oil extraction unit and one mist propagation chamber was also established under the said programme.

Fruit & Medicinal plants Development  was concluded during the year 1998 and the Station is being run by the JK Medicinal Plants Introduction Centre since then.

Catmint has a long history of use as a household herbal remedy, being employed especially in treating disorders of the digestive system and, as it stimulates sweating, it is useful in reducing fevers. The herbs pleasant taste and gentle action makes it suitable for treating colds, flu and fevers in children. It is more effective when used in conjunction with elder flower (Sambucus nigra). The leaves and flowering tops are strongly antispasmodic, antitussive, astringent, carminative, diaphoretic, slightly emmenagogue, refrigerant, sedative, slightly stimulant, stomachic and tonic. The flowering stems are harvested in August when the plant is in full flower, they are dried and stored for use as required. An infusion produces free perspiration, it is considered to be beneficial in the treatment of fevers and colds. It is also very useful in the treatment of restlessness and nervousness, being very useful as a mild nervine for children. A tea made from the leaves can also be used. The infusion is also applied externally to bruises, especially black eyes

The main effect of catnip, when taken internally, is the sedative effect it has and it is effective for calming a patient and is used with success to induce natural sleep.

It also helps to ease digestion, to treat treat colic and to promote sweating, while controlling the symptoms of diarrhea. Traditionally it is used for feverish illnesses such as colds and influenza, infections, rheumatism, allergies, as well as headaches, stress and toothaches.


It is used in a preparation to reduce swollen eyes and is useful for dandruff and various scalp disorders. Catmint is also included in ointments to treat hemorrhoids and as a rub for rheumatism and arthritis. It is used as an effective insect and rodent repellant.

Medicinal use of Cardiospermum halicacabum : The whole plant is diaphoretic, diuretic, emetic, emmenagogue, laxative, refrigerant, rubefacient, stomachic and sudorific. It is used in the treatment of rheumatism, nervous diseases, stiffness of the limbs and snakebite. The leaves are rubefacient, they are applied as a poultice in the treatment of rheumatism. A tea made from them is used in the treatment of itchy skin. Salted leaves are used as a poultice on swellings.The leaf juice has been used as a treatment for earache. The root is diaphoretic, diuretic, emmenagogue, laxative and rubefacient. It is occasionally used in the treatment of rheumatism, lumbago and nervous diseases.

Melissa officinalis tea

Herbaceous perennial. Native to the Kashmir, egypt. This is a classic medicinal tea herb. Assists in controlling high blood pressure, migraines, hysteria, melancholia, goiter, hyperthyroidism and Grave’s disease.

Cultivation  : Extra care. Light-dependent germinator. Sow outdoors in the fall or very early spring or provide 2 weeks of cold conditioning. Germ. in 10-40 days. Prefers full sun or shade; normal garden soil and minimal water. Plant 1.5 feet apart. Flowers yellow to 2 feet tall.
