The roots are considered to be stimulant and given in case of fever after the childbirth. Decocti
on of the roots is given in colic. Bruised roots are applied to eruptions.

Aromatic oil from the roots is applied over the affected part in gout and rheumatism. Locally
it is known as dhoop or Gugul and its tuberous roots are valued for incense in temples,
monastries, houses and religious ceremonies.

The woody rootstock is important medicinally and is collected by severing it with a sharp knife head. It is then cleansed, chopped and dried.

Essential oils and aromatic resins are extracted from it. The plant medicine is also taken as a decoction. For this, the roots are boiled in water, which is then cooled and taken orally.

The crushed roots are also administered to remit mental depression, excessive thirst, digestive disorders and dyspepsia

The plant materi al is also effective in healing eruptions. The aromatic oil extracted from the roots is
applied over the affected part.

The oil extracted from the plant is added to bathwater as it induces a feeling of freshness.

Medicinal use of Jurinea dolomiaea : A decoction of the root is cordial. It is given in the treatment of colic and puerperal fever. The juice of the roots is used in the treatment of fevers. The bruised root is applied as a poultice to eruptions.

Habitat of the herb: Open alpine slopes, 3200 - 3800 metres
Other uses of Jurinea dolomiaea: The root extract is used as an incense. The plant is used for incense.

Propagation of the herb: Seed - we have no information on this species but suggest sowing the seed in a cold frame as soon as it is obtained. Only just cover the seed. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts. Division in spring.`

Family: Solanaceae (Nightshade Family, Potato Family) Medicinal use of Tobacco: Tobacco has a long history of use by medical herbalists as a relaxant, though since it is a highly additive drug it is seldom employed internally or externally at present. It is currently (1991) being tested as a low calorie substitute for mayonnaise and whipped cream.

Other uses of the herb: All parts of the plant contain nicotine, this has been extracted and used as an insecticide. The dried leaves can also be used, they remain effective for 6 months after drying. The juice of the leaves can be rubbed on the body as an insect repellent. The wood is diaphoretic. The leaves are bitter, diaphoretic and purgative. They have proved useful in the treatment of rheumatism, Hair growth and syphilis. The bark is febrifuge.

Other uses of Buxus wallichiana: Plants can be grown as a hedge, they are very tolerant of pruning but are slow growing. Wood - hard, fine grained, durable. Used for engraving, fine carving, mathematical instruments etc. It is at least equal in quality to B. sempervirens.

Traditionally B. wallichiana used as bittertonic, diaphoretic, anti-rheumatic, vermifuge, antihelmentic, analgesic, purgative diuretic, antiepileptic, antileprotic and in hemorrhoids. The bark of B. wallichiana used as hair growth stimulant (13-16). Phytochemical reported are alkaloids buxemenol E (16), buxaltine H, Buxiramin D, buxatine, buxandrine F, buxidine F (15), (+)-16 α, 31-diacetylbuxadine (17), semperviraminol, buxamine F (18). The steroidal alkaloid buxemenol E from B. sempervirens found to produce hypotensive effect in rat attributed by central and peripheral activation of muscranic receptor and also, by the partial inhibition of acetylcholinestrase enzyme (16). The main aim of this study was to provide scientific evidence for traditional claim, hair growth activity of B. wallichiana bark.

A tea made from the dried herb is considered to be a sovereign remedy against haemorrhages of all kinds - the stomach, the lungs, the uterus and more especially the kidneys. The plant can be used fresh or dried, for drying it is harvested in the summer. The dried herb quickly loses its effectiveness and should not be stored for more than a year. Clinical trials on the effectiveness of this plant as a wound herb have been inconclusive. It appears that either it varies considerably in its effectiveness from batch to batch, or perhaps a white fungus that is often found on the plant contains the medically active properties. The plant has been ranked 7th amongst 250 potential anti-fertility plants in China. It has proven uterine-contracting properties and is traditionally used during childbirth. The plant is a folk remedy for cancer - it contains fumaric acid which has markedly reduced growth and viability of Ehrlich tumour in mice. A homeopathic remedy is made from the fresh plant. It is used in the treatment of nose bleeds and urinary calculus.

Medicinal use of Tobacco:Tobacco was a traditional North American Indian remedy for a wide range of conditions. Nowadays it is used mainly as a powerful antispasmodic herb in the treatment of respiratory and muscle disorders. Acting also as a respiratory stimulant, Indian Tobacco is a valuable remedy for conditions such as bronchial asthma and chronic bronchitis. 

The dried flowering herb and the seed are antiasthmatic, antispasmodic, diaphoretic, diuretic, emetic, expectorant and nervine. The plant is taken internally in the treatment of asthma, bronchitis, whooping cough and pleurisy. This remedy should be used with great caution and only under the supervision of a qualified practitioner. Excess doses cause nausea, vomiting, drowsiness and respiratory failure. 

See also the notes above on toxicity. The plant contains the alkaline "lobeline" which has proved to be of value in helping people to give up smoking tobacco. It is contained in many proprietary anti-smoking mixtures where it mimics the effects of nicotine. The alkaloids present in the leaves are used to stimulate the removal of phlegm from the respiratory tract. When chewed, the leaves induce vomiting, headache and nausea - in larger doses it has caused death. 

The alkaloids first act as a stimulant and then as a depressive to the autonomic nervous system and in high doses paralyses muscular action in the same way as curare. Externally, the plant is used in treating pleurisy, rheumatism, tennis elbow, whiplash injuries, boils and ulcers. The whole plant is harvested when the lower fruits are ripe and it is used fresh or dried.

The whole plant is alterative, antibacterial, antipyretic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, carminative, diuretic, febrifuge, hypotensive, stomachic, styptic, tonic, vermifuge and vulnerary. It has an antibacterial action, inhibiting the growth of Pseudomonas, Bacillus typhi, E. coli, Mycobacterium tuberculi etc. It can be used fresh or dried, for drying it is best harvested in mid-summer. The plant is experimentally antibiotic and hypotensive.

The leaves and flowering stems are strongly antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, cholagogue, diaphoretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, stimulant, stomachic and mildly tonic. The plant is taken internally in the treatment of colds, influenza, mild feverish illnesses, indigestion, stomach upsets and painful menstruation. It is strongly sedative and should not be taken in large doses, though mild teas have a soothing effect and aid restful sleep. It should not be prescribed for pregnant women. Externally, oregano is used to treat bronchitis, asthma, arthritis and muscular pain. The plant can be used fresh or dried - harvest the whole plant (but not the roots) in late summer to dry and store for winter use. Oregano is often used in the form of an essential oil that is distilled from the flowering plant. A few drops of the essential oil, put on cotton wool and placed in the hollow of an aching tooth, frequently relieves the pain of toothache. This plant is one of the best natural antiseptics because of its high thymol content. The essential oil is used in aromatherapy to treat the same kinds of complaints that the herb is used for.
