Grow nut trees

Almond nut trees in kashmir
Nut Trees– A five-acre plot of mature nut trees can produce a full-time income when well managed. The newest method is using permaculture to create a natural forest, with taller nut trees, such as walnuts and chestnuts for the upper story and shade-tolerant nuts, such as filberts, for the lower story. Growing nut tree seedlings to sell on a portion of the acreage can provide additional income. When the larger trees are full-grown, they can be selectively harvested for their valuable timber, which can bring lakhs for just one tree.

Tree farming in India

TREE FARMING – Old-fashioned ‘monocrop’ tree farms, with row after row of tree trunks with little on the ground between trunks is rapidly being replaced by a ‘greener’ and more profitable system called agroforestry. Agroforestry is a system that integrates crops, or livestock, or both, with trees to provide diversified income, better water retention and improved habitat for livestock and wildlife. Done right, it can provide much higher income, food for grazing animals, erosion control, shelter for the animals from sun and wind, even fix nitrogen in the soil! Starting a tree farm, if you have the acreage, can be a profitable business.

JAPANESE MAPLE trees in India

JAPANESE MAPLE – Acer palmatum is a small tree with a wide range of leaf shapes and colors that can be grown in most climate zones. Retail nurseries often refer to Japanese maples as a ‘collector’s tree,’ as collectors are willing to pay high prices. As an example, a local nursery that specializes in larger trees charges INR 3500 to 5000 for “specimen” Japanese maples.  The Japanese maple is a good choice for a tree nursery with limited space.

Sambucus nigra seeds in India

                                       Elderberry-ایلڈر بیری
Family: Caprifoliaceae (Honeysuckle Family)
Sambucus nigra is a cold climate species complex of flowering plants in the family Adoxaceae native to most of Europe and North America.Common names include elder, elderberry, black elder, European elder, European elderberry, and European black elderberry. It grows in a variety of conditions including both wet and dry fertile soils, primarily in sunny locations. The plant is a very common feature of hedgerows and scrubland in Britain and northern Europe, but is also widely grown as an ornamental shrub or small tree. Both the flowers and the berries have a long tradition of culinary use, primarily for cordial and wine. The Latin specific epithet nigra means "black", and refers to the deeply dark colour of the berries.

Although elderberry is commonly used in dietary supplements and traditional medicine, there is no scientific evidence that it provides any benefit for maintaining health or treating diseases.

Prunus cerasus plants in Kashmir

Sour Cherry-Prunus cerasus
Bot. name : Prunus cerasus Synonyms: Cerasus communis, Cerasus vulgaris Family: Rosaceae (Rose Family)
Wild Cherry trees in Kashmir
Sour Cherry: The bark is astringent, bitter and febrifuge. An infusion of the bark has been used in the treatment of fevers, coughs and colds. The root bark has been used as a wash for old sores and ulcers. The seed is nervine. Although no specific mention has been seen for this species, all members of the genus contain amygdalin and prunasin, substances which break down in water to form hydrocyanic acid (cyanide or prussic acid). In small amounts this exceedingly poisonous compound stimulates respiration, improves digestion and gives a sense of well-being.

Persimmon plants of Kashmir

Persimmon fruit trees Kashmir
Persimmon-جاپانی پھل،املوک
Bot. name: Diospyros kaki-ڈیوسپائروس کاکی
Synonyms: Diospyros chinensis
Family: Ebenaceae (Ebony Family)
Persimmon-Diospyros kaki : Appetizer, sialagogue. The stem bark is astringent and styptic. The fruit is said to have different properties depending on its stage of ripeness, though it is generally antitussive, astringent, laxative, nutritive and stomachic. The fresh fully ripe fruit is used raw in the treatment of constipation and haemorrhoids and when cooked is used to treat diarrhoea. The fruits are also peeled and then exposed to sunlight by day and dew by night. They become encrusted with a white powder and are then considered to be anthelmintic, antihaemorrhagic, antivinous, expectorant, febrifuge and restorative. The peduncle is used to treat coughs and hiccups. The calyx is used to treat hiccups.

Solamum dulcamara plants in Kashmir

Solamum dulcamara plants found in kashmir
Bittersweet is a poisonous plant that has a long history of use in the treatment of skin diseases, warts, tumours, felons etc. It should be used with caution and only under the supervision of a qualified practitioner, this is a poisonous plant that, in excess, paralyzes the central nervous system, slows the heart and respiration, and lowers temperature, causing vertigo, delirium, convulsions and death. See also the notes above on toxicity.

All parts of the plant are alterative, anodyne, depurative, mildly diuretic, emetic, expectorant, hepatic, mildly narcotic and purgative. The dried stem, usually collected in the autumn and preferably from the ends of branches 2 - 3 years old, is the part that is most valued medicinally, though the leaves are also used. The plant is chiefly used as an alterative when taken internally in the treatment of a range of skin diseases, it is also used in the treatment of arthritis, rheumatism, bronchial congestion, heart ailments, ulcerative colitis and jaundice.  Externally, the plant is used to treat skin eruptions, ulcers, rheumatism and cellulite.

Two to three year old stems are harvested in the spring, or after the leaves have fallen in the autumn, and dried for later use.The fruits are marinated in vinegar and applied to cancerous sores and other swellings. A decoction of the root is used in the treatment of cancer and swellings. The root is harvested in the autumn and dried for later use.

A homeopathic remedy is made from the fresh, green, still pliant stems and leaves, harvested as the plant begins to flower. This is used in treating a variety of complaints including backaches, cough, diarrhoea, eye inflammations and joint pains.
