Ginkgo Plant Provides Some of the Best Autumn Colour in Your Property

The Ginkgo biloba, often called the maidenhair tree, is one of the most spectacular trees for autumn colour. If you want a garden tree that combines beauty, longevity, distinctive foliage, and seasonal drama, ginkgo deserves a prominent place in the landscape.

Throughout spring and summer, ginkgo has attractive fan-shaped green leaves that create a fresh, elegant appearance. The real transformation comes in autumn, when the foliage gradually changes from green to brilliant golden yellow. Under suitable conditions, an entire ginkgo tree can appear to glow in the autumn sunshine.

One of the most remarkable features of ginkgo is the intensity and uniformity of its autumn colour. Many trees develop mixed shades of yellow, orange, brown, or red as their leaves age. Ginkgo can instead produce a striking golden-yellow display that gives a garden a distinctive seasonal character.

The leaves are also unusual. Their fan-like shape is instantly recognizable, with delicate veins radiating across the leaf surface. When hundreds or thousands of these leaves turn yellow simultaneously, the effect can be spectacular.

Ginkgo is also an exceptionally ancient tree lineage. Its survival through geological time has earned it a reputation as a living fossil. A well-established tree can become a long-term feature of a garden, park, institutional campus, or avenue.

For gardeners, another advantage is its potential adaptability. Ginkgo generally prefers a sunny position and well-drained soil, although established trees can tolerate a range of urban and environmental conditions. Good sunlight is particularly important if the objective is to obtain strong autumn colour.
Planting location should therefore be considered carefully.

Give the tree sufficient space to develop its crown and root system. A young ginkgo may appear modest when planted, but over many years it can develop into a substantial landscape tree.

Ginkgo can be planted as a specimen tree, along avenues, in large gardens, around institutions, or as part of a long-term landscape project. Its golden autumn display can become one of the most memorable seasonal features of the property.

For Kashmir and other temperate regions, ginkgo can be especially interesting as a landscape tree because its deciduous habit provides a clear seasonal transition—from fresh green foliage in summer to brilliant yellow in autumn and bare branches during winter.

A ginkgo is not simply a tree for one season. It is a long-term investment in landscape beauty. Its distinctive leaves, remarkable history, resilience, and exceptional autumn colour make it a valuable addition to gardens where adequate space is available.
